Drive Units:

General information:

The drive units shown below are used to lower propeller r.p.m. and reduce torque on the electric motor. When the torque, or load is reduced on the motor in your model, running time will be improved. An additional benefit to using a reduction drive is a more realistic speed for your model. These drive units are designed to use the most commonly available electric motors, namely the "380", "540", "550" series motors manufactured by companies like Mitsubishi and Johnson. The larger drive unit can also be used with the industry standard Dumas/Pittman motor as well.

Note: When combining drive reduction units with gear boxes, the ratio of the first is multiplied by the second. Example: 380 drive unit with a 2.5:1 reduction, connected to an adapt-a-drive gearbox with a 1.5:1 reduction, yields a total of 3.75:1 reduction ( 2.5 * 1.5 = 3.75).

 380 Drive System (new and improved)

This compact drive system has been redesigned to use a more powerful and efficient, 6 volt motor with a 2.5:1 belt reduction unit. The longer drive shaft makes it easier to install in more models!  This motor/reduction combination is quiet and powerful, but has less current draw than speed 400 based drive units.  A smaller current draw = more time in the water!  It is the ideal motive power for smaller boats and submarines up to approximately 4 feet in length. The new extra long shaft housing allows for the easy addition of a watertight seal (380 drive seal) outside the pressure hull or water proof box. 

Includes 3 noise suppression capacitors.

540 Drive System

This is the big brother to the 380 drive unit.  This drive unit comes with either a standard 540 or 550 size motor, built in shaft seal, and a choice of reduction ratios. Reduction ratios range from 2.5:1 to 5:1.

This unit can also accommodate the industry standard Dumas/Pittman 6 or 12 volt motors (not included).

Includes 3 noise suppression capacitors.

Drive Reduction Unit

Accepts most '500' series and Dumas/Pittman motors. Machined Aluminum body, bronze bushings, pinion, drive pulley , timing belt and 3/16" stainless steel shaft.

Requires a suitable motor mount. Available on the motor mount page. Motor not included.

Dumas Adapt-A-Drive

This gear set is the simple solution to a complex problem; driving two shafts from a single motor. These gear boxes come in 1.5 and 2 to 1 ratios. Ideal for cramped hulls and for placement in the "wet" portion of the hull, between the WTC and drive shafts.
